This little green statue carved in a type of jade is "The Emerald Buddha," the most important object in Thailand. Its origin is mysterious but it was brought to Thailand in the 15th century, removed to Laos by 16th century invaders, and recaptured 200 years later by the general who founded the current dynasty as King Rama I. It has enormous occult significance and the King himself climbs up to re-robe the statue three times per year.
